Champions Ascension: An Unexpected Fighting Game

Champions Ascension: An Unexpected Fighting Game

I tried out Champions Ascension during last month's playtest and I was astounded. I had no idea the developers could create such a complex and comprehensive fighting game. Yes, you heard that right, a FIGHTING game. Based on the previous clips I saw about the game, it looked like an Action RPG. I was much more excited to try it out once I knew I was wrong. Here are the things that I found out when I played the game.

The Gameplay

Before I began trying it out myself, I wanted to have a look at how other people played it first. So I watch the live battles between other players first. From a side view, the fight looks similar to a 3D fighting game like Tekken. Fighters move around in a confined area, exchanging punches and kicks in an attempt to gain the upper hand. Each punch and kick is accompanied by loud grunts and cries of pain, intensifying the fight. Even more captivating is the fact that the fighters can move in all three dimensions. They can Dodge and block with remarkable agility and speed.

After that, I tried out the game for myself. From the player's perspective, this game is quite like “For Honor”. Yet, it's undeniable that this is a fighting game. It's sure to be a hit with the fighting game community.

Different characters provide various combat styles that change players’ strategies in the game. Players have 3 different character options during playtesting with 3 different archetypes each. This gives them the chance to try out different styles and abilities. Each character has its unique features, so no two players have the same experience.

The great advantage of the abilities of each hero in the game is their user-friendliness and lack of complex button inputs. Each ability is mapped to a distinct button, making it easy for beginners to get started. This mapping also creates an intuitive user interface. It enables users to easily remember which abilities the buttons are associated with. This makes it much simpler for users to become proficient in these abilities and take advantage of their many benefits.

Button mapping for abilities

It's important to keep in mind that there are no grab buttons in this game. If the enemy blocks our attacks, our only option may be to use unblockable abilities to counter them. However, these moves come with their risks, as they may be harder to execute than traditional moves. Additionally, the enemy may be using similar strategies, making the situation more complex.

Fighting Game Footsies

Champions Ascension highlighted the importance of attack animation in the game's documentation. They emphasize that players should be aware of Wind Up and Recovery frames, as they will be vulnerable during this time. Mastering the art of ‘Footsies’ is essential for playing this game, as it is with many other fighting games. Learning to predict opponents' next move and act accordingly is a key component of success. Moreover, it's important to react quickly and find ways to counter enemy attacks. Developing the necessary skills is critical for success.

Three parts of the attack; Wind up, Active, and Recovery

The footsies game is similar to a rock-paper-scissors game. The objective of the game is to use Hit Attack, Whiff Punish, and Cover Attack to outwit your opponent. In this game,

  • Hit Attack beats Whiff Punish,
  • Whiff Punish beats Cover Attack, and
  • Cover Attack beats Hit Attack.

However, the key to victory is not only knowing the rules of the game but also having a keen eye for your opponent's next move. With the right strategy and skill, you can use your moves to out-maneuver your opponent and gain the upper hand. The Footsies Trilemma suggests three possible options when approaching an opponent. Poking, spacing, and advancing. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and it's up to the player to decide which to use in each situation.

Here's a video from HiFight that provides an in-depth look at the Footsies Trilemma. For those unfamiliar with the concept, it's an important one in fighting games that players must consider for optimal success. He breaks down the different facets of the Footsies Trilemma, providing insight into the concept and how it can be used in the game. He also provides examples of how it can be applied in various situations. This gives players a better understanding of how to use this concept in their gameplay.

Final Thoughts

I'm filled with anticipation as I explore the possibilities of Web3 and the exciting new fighting games it offers.  These games provide a truly unique experience. From stunning graphics to an unprecedented level of freedom and control.

Champion Ascension’s graphics were impressive, the controls intuitive, and the combat intense. Each character had its own unique set of moves and abilities. Normal attacks performed in succession create powerful combos. The online play was smooth and lag-free, making the experience even more enjoyable. Here’s hoping to see the game evolves even better when it comes out!
